Posted on December 21st, 2011 No Comments

State officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are currently investigating reports of fumes at an elementary school.

According to officials, maintenance crews were trying to unclog a sewer line that was backed up and were using a solvent to do so, but this allegedly did not work.

he next day, teachers claimed that they smelled a strong odor throughout the school. Workers then used fans and opened all of the school’s windows in order to alleviate the smell. Teachers then started to complain that they were feeling ill and some experienced respiratory illnesses.

Officials investigating fatal cotton gin accident

Posted on December 13th, 2011 No Comments

Two weeks ago, a man who was working as a forklift operator at Jones County Cotton Gin to raise money for Christmas was injured in a workplace accident at the cotton gin.  The 62-year old worker passed away later that day from the traumatic injuries he suffered in the accident.

Emergency crews found the man conscious and lying on the ground surrounded by cotton bales that appeared to have fallen.  The bales weigh several hundreds of pounds each.

There were no witnesses to the accident.  Investigators with the North Carolina Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division, Jones County Cotton Gin, and the company’s insurance company are looking into what caused the fatal accident.

Our utmost sympathies go out to the victim’s family and friends.

OSHA asks retailers to protect employees on Black Friday

Posted on November 21st, 2011 No Comments

This coming Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is Black Friday.  Accordingly, retailers across the country will be opening early and offering huge sales for consumers looking to get started on their holiday shopping.

Last Thursday, officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a statement encouraging retailers to implement plans that will protect their employees from being injured on the job.  In particular, the agency recommends that retailers come up with crowd management strategies.  On Black Friday in 2008, a retail store employee was killed when a mob of shoppers rushed the store and he was trampled.

The statement included a tip sheet which suggests using an online lottery for more desirable items to prevent crowd rushing or fights among shoppers, implementing additional communication systems like using bullhorns, and designating certain workers to call 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency or injury.

Workplace injuries up in healthcare industry

Posted on November 15th, 2011 No Comments

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, workplace injures in the healthcare industry are increasing.

Last year, nonfatal injuries and illnesses to attendants, orderlies, and nursing aides increased by 7 percent with approximately 489 incidents per 10,000 workers.  Support workers in the healthcare industry experienced a 6 percent increase in injuries and illnesses to a rate of about 283 incidents per 10,000 workers.

The highest increase was in musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare workers.  The rate of these injuries among healthcare workers increased by 10 percent with 249 incidents per 10,000 workers.

The average injury and illness incident rate for workers in the U.S. workforce is approximately 118 incidents per 10,000 workers.

OSHA Assistant Secretary David Michaels stated, “It is unacceptable that the workers who have dedicated their lives to caring for our loved ones when they are sick are the very same workers who face the highest risk of work-related injury and illness.”

Economic troubles increase workplace stress, injuries

Posted on October 25th, 2011 No Comments

According to a recent survey, 62 percent of workers in the U.S. feel that their employer is trying to do more work with fewer resources after the economic recession.  Researchers call this “worker intensification” because employees are being asked to do more with fewer resources, in less time, and for the same amount of pay.

55 percent of workers have taken on more responsibilities after the recession and 70 percent of these have done so without an increase in pay.  In addition, 51 percent of survey participants reported that their added responsibilities at work have had a negative effect on their well-being.

The survey also says that as workplaces become more stressful, conflict between employees increases and employees experience a greater inability to concentrate and do their job to the best of their ability.  Furthermore, workplace stress leads to a greater number of employees taking sick leave and an increase in workplace accidents and injuries.

Legislators debate OSHA roofing regulation

Posted on October 12th, 2011 No Comments

Last week, legislators in the U.S. House of Representatives were reported to be debating the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s regulations.

The focus of the debate was on a new regulation that requires roofers to use use safety harnesses in residential projects.  Head of OSHA David Michaels was asked to give a presentation to a House of Representatives subcommittee on the reasons for the new regulation, as well as a few other recent regulations.

While many legislators agree that the regulation will reduce workplace injuries and fatalities, others say it is not worth the cost and red tape it creates.  Michaels described OSHA’s regulations as “vitally important” in his appearance before the House subcommittee.

Heat exposure, dehydration, and workplace injuries

Posted on July 28th, 2011 No Comments

Heat exposure and dehydration can lead to a variety of dangerous situations in the workplace.  Not only have heat and dehydration been connected to heat exhaustion, cramps, fainting, and heat stroke, but they can also cause fall accidents and equipment operation accidents.

Blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, disorientation, and sweaty palms are all symptoms of heat exposure and dehydration.  Another common problem associated with heat exposure in the workplace is fogged safety glasses.  All of these can lead to accidents and serious injury.

Statistics show that a dehydration level of 2 percent of an individual’s body weight impairs vision and a dehydration level of 4 percent of body weight causes a 23 percent reduction in reaction time.  Furthermore, data shows that about 80 percent of people wake up in the morning dehydrated.

Heat-related workplace accidents and injuries can occur in both indoor and outdoor workplaces.  Contact the Raleigh workplace injury lawyers of Scudder & Hedrick, PLLC at 919-851-3311 today, if you or someone you love has been injured in a workplace accident.

The U.S. Department of Labor recently cited a Charlotte construction company, Crowder Construction Co., for causing multiple safety hazards.  Crowder Construction Co. is responsible for building the basin at the Gatlinburg Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In addition, the company is responsible for building the basin at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant which collapsed in June 2004 and killed two workers.  According North Carolina OSHA documents, in a separate incident, a worker was using a “job-made” ladder constructed by Crowder when it tipped over and the worker fell 16 feet.

National Workers Memorial Day

Posted on May 4th, 2011 No Comments

On April 28th, communities and workplaces across the country recognized National Workers Memorial Day.  The first Workers Memorial Day was recognized in 1989 and was assigned its date because it marks the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act signed in 1971.

The day is recognized every year to memorialize workers injured or killed performing work duties.  Workers Memorial Day was honored by the United Nations in 2001 as World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

According to the latest U.S. worker injury and fatality figures, 4,340 were killed on the job in 20o9.  In addition, 50,000 people were estimated to have passed away from occupational diseases.  Furthermore, 4.1 million people reported being injured or becoming ill in workplaces.

Teacher attacked, school district considers tighter security

Posted on February 22nd, 2011 No Comments

On the first of the month, a teacher at Alderman Elementary School in Greensboro, North Carolina was attacked while trying to get some work done after hours.  The pre-Kindergarten teacher was in the school’s parking lot at around 7:45 P.M. when a man approached her with a gun, tied her up and locked her in a closet at the school.  The man also stole her credit cards and SUV.

Now, district officials are considering implementing tighter security measures at schools after working hours.  ”It could have been any employee.  This person is just someone trying to do a good job and trying to do the right thing in terms of what they’re focusing on in the classroom,” said chief of staff for Guilford County Schools Nora Carr.
