Two City Workers Injured When Stair Case Falls

Posted on March 4th, 2009 No Comments

Three people were injured in Louisville, Kentucky on Tuesday when a staircase collapsed.  Two of the individuals injured in the accident were city workers.

Emergency officials were called to the scene to help the accident victims.  The two city workers and the other individuals dropped over 30 feet to the ground on the staircase that collapsed.

The two city workers were with another individual inspecting the building for possible purchase.  The building could have been a part of a renovation project to restore the building which has been a historic structure among the city for over a hundred years.

South Carolina Debating Worker Comp Bill

Posted on February 25th, 2009 1 Comment

A new workers compensation bill is being debated in South Carolina.  The bill is aimed at cutting disability benefits for illegal immigrants in this country.  The bill will allow for illegal immigrants to receive medical coverage,  but will not allow them to collect workers disability benefits or payments if they are injured in a work related accident.

Those arguing for the bill believe that this will help the state ensure that only legal residents have jobs and will serve as a deterrent to companies hiring illegal workers.  However,  many individuals against the bill disagree with it for a number of reasons. Those against the bill say that it does not benefit the working person,  but the insurance companies that are responsible for such payments.  It also points out that illegal immigrants typically work some of the most dangerous jobs in the state,  so for them not to receive payment would be unfair and unjust.

Executive for Workers Compensation Insurance Convicted

Posted on February 17th, 2009 No Comments

A Montgomery executive was convicted of 23 counts of mail fraud, embezzlement, and filing a false report.

The executive, John Goff, used to head the  Goff Group which supplied workers compensation in North Carolina.  Prosecutors say he kept a lot of money from the company for himself, and he failed to pay out more than $4 million in premiums.   Prosecution stated that Goff was put in a position of trust and abused the trust that was given to him.

John Goff could expect to spend more than 20 years in jail if convicted on all counts.  The defense is likely to appeal the convictions.
