Drug companies frequently pay off doctors

Posted on October 25th, 2010 No Comments

In a study completed by ProPublica of seven major drug companies, researchers found that more than 17,000 doctors in the U.S. have taken money from drug companies.  Researchers believe that their report was limited in its study of only seven drug companies and that there are certainly many more doctors who have received payments from other drug producers.  Over 380 doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals took more than $100,000 in payments over the past two years.

Although medical professionals receiving payments from drug companies is not illegal, many believe that it can lead to swayed judgement and unethical practices.  Investigators from ProPublica and several other sources report that doctors are often told to recommend “off-label” prescriptions.  ”Off-Label” prescriptions means prescribing a drug for something it is not approved to treat.
