South Carolina Debating Worker Comp Bill

Posted on February 25th, 2009 1 Comment

A new workers compensation bill is being debated in South Carolina.  The bill is aimed at cutting disability benefits for illegal immigrants in this country.  The bill will allow for illegal immigrants to receive medical coverage,  but will not allow them to collect workers disability benefits or payments if they are injured in a work related accident.

Those arguing for the bill believe that this will help the state ensure that only legal residents have jobs and will serve as a deterrent to companies hiring illegal workers.  However,  many individuals against the bill disagree with it for a number of reasons. Those against the bill say that it does not benefit the working person,  but the insurance companies that are responsible for such payments.  It also points out that illegal immigrants typically work some of the most dangerous jobs in the state,  so for them not to receive payment would be unfair and unjust.

Social Security Changes Later Rather Than Sooner

Posted on February 25th, 2009 No Comments

President Obama had promised reform and change to Social Security while on the 2008 Presidential Campaign trail.  With his first 30 days in office complete,  it seems that his plans for Social Security are being stalled.

According to many reports,  President Obama was looking to seek a bipartisan solution to improving the current flaws in the Social Security system.  With the economy in its current recession,  many democrats are urging Obama that now is not the time.  Democrat lawmakers believe that to overhaul the system would require a massive political push that would use up too much political capital.  They believe that it would be fiercely contested between Republicans and Democrats, and are urging reform in other areas like healthcare instead of Social Security.

It is unfortunate that Social Security can been seen as a political game,  whenever many people rely on it to get by.

Executive for Workers Compensation Insurance Convicted

Posted on February 17th, 2009 No Comments

A Montgomery executive was convicted of 23 counts of mail fraud, embezzlement, and filing a false report.

The executive, John Goff, used to head the  Goff Group which supplied workers compensation in North Carolina.  Prosecutors say he kept a lot of money from the company for himself, and he failed to pay out more than $4 million in premiums.   Prosecution stated that Goff was put in a position of trust and abused the trust that was given to him.

John Goff could expect to spend more than 20 years in jail if convicted on all counts.  The defense is likely to appeal the convictions.
